Depression…is not laziness

Overthinking/Anxiety/Depression

I saw a tweet a few weeks ago on Elon’s platform which said

“depression is not an excuse to be lazy but to each their own”

Obviously, I wanted to scream and shout and yell and then scream some more at the clearly inebriated individual who had sent out the tweet but instead, I just reported it.

In life, I realise there are stupid people.

Stupid people who can’t help but be stupid.

Stupid people who have yet to deal with life’s little consequences because they live in a cocoon of their own facade and ignorance.

Stupid people who continue to hold back the essence of humanity with their less than emphatic dictions on their definition of what empathy is or should be.

Head in the clouds

I realise all of this because had I not, I would want to go as far as seeing people like this castrated, at the hands of the law, not physically – I am not a psychopath like them…no, I am more an empath.

All of the above being said, it does sadden me that we have a [young] generation of people who think and believe/behave like this. Even if it is for ‘clout’, or to stay controversially topical.

It is an abhorrent statement because the fact of the matter is countless people battle depression every day; many end up giving up the fight and ending their own lives, due to reading or seeing something as selfish and crude as such.

There are too many things that act as triggers for people and social media remain at the top of that list.

Life is a battle.

Success is a battle.

Being hardworking is a battle.

But no one wakes up and says

“hey, do you know what would really spice up my life? How about a sprinkle of mental health? Yes, that should make me more interesting. Depression, I choose you, like a game of Pokémon.”

Something happens.

Someone happens.

People happen.

Life…happens.

Like a chemical reaction, something in their life’s equation had a catalytic effect which led to a combustion of energy thus exhaustion, thus, fatigue, thus lack of motivation, etc, and thus…depression.

It isn’t just laziness, nor is it something anyone chooses.

Moreover, it is particularly difficult at this time of the year and at the current stage of the world…we are going through a period of extreme poverty, war, and existential crisis, so, to be able to utter those words, you must be coming from a place of privilege AND ignorance – two deadly combinations.

How about not speaking on matters you know nothing about?

How about not spewing hatred because it will gain you some hate, which in turn translates to popularity in this very simple generation's mind's eye?

How about thinking of other people for once and not just the nonsensical pinball machine, idle, thoughts bouncing around your empty, TikTok dance-infested, echoey head?

I could say more but I believe I will leave it at that and leave the rest to common sense, hopefully.

We are all human and life could change…in an instant.

For me, for you…for all of us.

Be Kind.

Hope
